What We’ve Funded
p.a.v.e., the performing arts venture experience, is ASU’s arts entrepreneurship program housed in the Herberger Institute School of Theatre and Film. We are pleased to announce the recipients of the fall 2009 p.a.v.e. seed grants for student innovation and creativity. The grants, made possible by the Kauffman Campus Initiative, are designed to help student arts entrepreneurs launch their creative ventures. The six projects being awarded fall 2009 seed grants are:
- Join and Cast Ventures – Two Art (Intermedia) students, Jennifer Campbell and Catherine Akins, are producing a field guide to the downtown Phoenix arts scene that is itself a work of art.
- Radio Healer – Led by Arts, Media Engineering (AME) graduate student Christopher Martinez, Radio Healer presents mediated performances that foster intercultural dialogue in Native communities.
- Dance and Health Together Awards – Led by undergraduate Dance major Mary Porter, the DaHT Awards is a combination of dance recognition award and fundraising enterprise benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
- Co-op Film Productions – Film and Media Production/Marketing student Chelsea Ryan and her team are creating a support infrastructure for student collaboration across arts and design disciplines.
- Different from What? Film Festival – AME graduate student Lisa Tolentino in collaboration with Education student Federico Waitoller is producing a film festival focused on films by, for, and about adults with disabilities.
- Scratch Theory – Filmmaking Practices major Chris Gallego and his collaborators are developing a software/hardware interface that will first notate and then play back via synthesizer DJ scratching.
What We’ve Funded in Past Years:
Phoenix Fringe Festival – Now in its third year, two students pursuing the MFA in Theatre established the Phoenix Fringe Festival. The 2008 festival featured 13 performing artists/companies. The festival doubled in size in 2009 and incorporated multiple venues.
Progressive Theatre Workshop – In its third year and founded by an undergraduate theatre major and his creative collaborators, Progressive Theatre Workshop is an independent 501(c)3 corporation that develops new work devised by the group. Progressive Theatre Workshop’s production of Shots: A Love Story was presented locally as well as at the New York International Fringe Festival. Their second season featured three original works.
Hoisted Sail Productions – Hoisted Sail is a digital video production house. An undergraduate film student and his business partner, a political science major, founded the company to provide video marketing services to the metro Phoenix area.
Rehearsal Assistant – Rehearsal Assistant is a software product under development by graduate students in Dance and Arts, Media and Engineering to provide real–time feedback and recording of dance rehearsals.
Kromatic Entertainment – Still in development, Kromatic Entertainment is the brainchild of a film and media production freshman who has a vision and talent for producing music videos and digital audio portfolios.
This event is made possible by the ASU Herberger Institute School of Theatre and Film through a generous grant from the Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City and our co-sponsors: ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, ASU Herberger Institute School of Art, ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, ASU W.P. Carey School of Business and the ASU School of Public Affairs.
