Undergraduate Prospective Students
School of Theatre and Film Application Requirements
BA in Theatre
- Apply to ASU. Once you have applied and have been accepted to ASU, you must submit additional material and have an interview to gain full admission to the BA in Theatre program.
- Complete School of Theatre and Film application materials. Pre-theatre majors must submit the following application materials in order to be considered for acceptance as a BA in Theatre major in the Herberger College School of Theatre and Film. This application may be submitted prior to your arrival on campus or during your first semester.
Application Deadlines: Sept. 28, 2007 for an October 2007 interview*
Feb. 21, 2008 for a March 2008 interview
*If you are a current ASU student, you must interview in October.
- Complete the School of Theatre and Film application form.
- Submit a three-page, double-spaced essay. The essay should answer the question: Why are the theatre and the performing arts important and how will their study further your own goals?
- Submit a critical essay. The essay should be about a theatrical production you have seen. The essay should be no more than two pages, double-spaced and not simply a summary.
- Submit letters of reference. At least one and no more than three letters of reference from a teacher or someone with whom you have had professional and/or artistic interaction. Do not submit letters from relatives or close friends. These letters may be mailed directly to the Herberger College (address below) or included with your application materials.
- Submit one from among the following:
- Additional writing sample. The sample can be of any length on a theatre or film topic of your choice.
- Two one-minute audition monologues. One monologue must be contemporary and one not. Auditions will take place at the time of your interview with the faculty committee on Oct. 25-27, 2007 or March 27-29, 2008. If you are currently enrolled at ASU you must interview in October.
- Portfolio. The portfolio must include at least 10 images of theatrical design, visual arts or production activity. Images may include scene or costume sketches, lighting storyboards, drafting, studio art, audio material. Hard copy prints are preferred - no slides or CDs. These can be brought with you to the interview and do not have to be submitted beforehand.
- Original ten-minute play.
- A two-to three-page essay. The essay should answer the question: How does theatre benefit children and adolescents?
- Original screenplay. The screenplay may be any length.
- Original video. The video should be no more than 10 minutes in length and on DVD (preferred) or VHS.
- Send application materials to the Herberger College of the Arts. Application materials must be received by Sept. 28, 2007 for the October interviews and Feb. 21, 2008 for the March interviews.

- Interview with faculty. The audition/portfolio review dates for admitted freshman and transfer students are as follows:
Oct. 25-27, 2007 (application deadline: Sept. 28, 2007)
March 27-29, 2008 (application deadline: Feb. 21, 2008)
The Herberger College will schedule the specific date and time for your interview and notify you once your date and time has been scheduled once all other application materials have been received.
If you are a current ASU student, you must interview in October. Incoming freshman and transfers who are unable to travel to the Tempe campus in October 2007 or March 2008 can be admitted into the pre-major program and audition in October 2008 for formal admission to the major.
