City of Angels and Big Apple beckon filmmaker Mike Healy
I’m most inspired by human interaction. I feel the most creative when I’m near other motivated, optimistic and artistic people. My college experiences now are preparing me for my post-graduation plans of working as a director of photography on a big-budget film in Los Angeles or New York City.
Each day my goal gets closer through the relationships I’ve made and the work I’m doing at ASU. So far, the most amazing experience for me was getting accepted into the film and media production program in the Herberger Institute School of Theatre and Film. It was a huge relief knowing that I could continue on my curricular path and not have to wait another semester to attain my post-graduation goals.
People also are eager to bring film to Arizona, which makes it much easier to find assistance for projects and build on what I learn in class. My peers and faculty give me all of the support and tools I need to create projects my way. I’m also lucky to get a lot of one-on-one help. If I have a question or want to learn something new, all I have to do is ask and someone shows me.
Professors like Gus Edwards, Michael Switzer and Chris LaMont each have shaped my life in a different way. Gus has shown me the reality of life and how simple things really are, giving me the passion and drive to do what I want. Michael Switzer has shown me the ins and outs of making it as a director in Hollywood – and I’ve gotten the independent filmmaking perspective from Chris LaMont. Together, they all have helped shape the path that I want to take in life. I also can’t forget to thank my dad for all of his encouragement – he’s my biggest fan.
